Green-fingered residents from Bourne Mews allotment in Netherfield dug deep and provided their tasty home-grown vegetables as part of the nationwide Big Soup Share.
Freshly picked chard, onions and leeks were given for the initiative, which encourages people to share their produce to make heart-warming soups, over a fortnight.
The St. George’s Centre in Netherfield is taking part and café staff will be providing different delicious soups and bread at lunchtime every day for free over half-term.
The annual Big Soup Share is an event promoted by the Royal Horticultural Society and began in order to encourage schools to grow their own vegetables and make healthy, hearty soup. Since then, it has extended to community gardening groups, businesses, charities and individuals.
This is one of the COVID safe activities Jigsaw Homes Midlands neighbourhood engagement team is sponsoring, in partnership with St George’s Centre and Morrisons supermarket between 19 and 30 October.
Morrisons have also donated 50 pumpkins and 50 safe pumpkin carving kits for people to take away after a short ‘pumpkin talk’ from a local horticulturalist outside the Centre on 20th and 27th October. This includes a pumpkin carving demonstration. This is for pre-booked groups of a maximum of five people, who will be given recipe cards so they can try their hand at make the different soups at home. Please call 0115 9113302 to book your place on this great free activity.
Residents Carol and Victoria (pictured) who provided the home-grown produce said: “It’s great that our veg will be used to make some fantastic soup – we look forward to tasting it!”
Anyone in the area who might be struggling to put food on the table during half term is welcome to come and enjoy some free soup during the Big Soup Share Fortnight.
